Premier Ford recently announced plans to remove speed cameras. But why?
Several of his cabinet ministers (or their staff) were recently caught exceeding speed limits.
Some reportedly meet the legal definition of stunt driving, as told in the Global News article dated Oct 7th. Such behaviour crosses a line. It's more than irresponsibility-- it's reckless. And it erodes public trust.
At best, this move reflects a lack of full understanding of its implications and consequences.
The ethical course would be to commit to evidence-based safety measures, and present a renewed plan. The public requires transparency. According to the CBC news article dated Oct 6th, a joint study conducted by SickKids and Toronto Metropolitan University showed cameras reduced speeding by up to 45% in Toronto, with similar results across other municipalities.
At worst, this proposal places private interests ahead of public safety.
As politicians, we must never forget: we are human first. If we demand discipline, integrity, respect and compassion of others, we must embody those values ourselves. Perfection isn't achievable.
Credibility, empathy and accountability are.
What you can do as a citizen:
--Ask your local MPP or City Councillor to share all data behind the decision
--Support evidence-based road-safety initiatives
Only by facing facts- and holding each other accountable- can we build safer, more trustworthy communities.
